Five Most Dangerous Foods For Dogs

Dogs are basically furry little vacuum cleaners with zero survival instincts when it comes to snacks. Unfortunately there are some human foods that will have terrible impacts on your pup. Dogs will confidently inhale an entire chocolate bar like you have abandoned your parental duties and neglected feeding your pet. Dogs everywhere continue living by the philosophy of “if it hits the floor, it belongs to me,” completely unaware that their greatest enemy might be a single innocent-looking grape rolling under the table. Below, you will find the top 5 foods to keep away from your dog to avoid astronomical vet bills that you will definitely cough up because we love our dogs unconditionally.

1. Chocolate: The first food item making an appearance on this list is chocolate because while humans find it delectable it will have you rushing your dog off to the vet. A dog's relationship with chocolate is comparable to the relationship you have with your ex. Queasy, on the verge of getting sick, that feeling you get when you think of your ex will appear in a physical form in your dog if they get into your secret stash of chocolate. To a dog, chocolate smells like forbidden treasure; to a dog’s stomach, it’s basically a betrayal wrapped in dessert form. Chocolate contains theobromine, which humans process just fine, but dogs handle with all the efficiency of a raccoon trying to do taxes. So while people see chocolate cake as comfort food, dogs see it as “the reason we’re going to the emergency vet at 2 a.m.”

2. Grapes: The next food item on our list is grapes. These seemingly harmless, delicious fruit will savagely destroy your dog's insides and have you speed racing your way to the vet. Grapes are incredibly toxic to dogs and will severely damage their kidneys. Grapes are scary because even one singular grape can suddenly send your dog into life threatening kidney failure. Grapes may look like tiny edible water balloons, but for dogs they’re basically forbidden doom berries. Grapes and raisins are extremely toxic to dogs and can cause rapid kidney failure, which is terrifying considering dogs will gladly eat literally anything that hits the floor in under 0.2 seconds. The tartaric acid found in grapes will go directly for their kidneys which will make them unable to properly filter waste.

3. Garlic: Garlic is next on our list of toxic foods for dogs. We all love adding this seasoning in heaps to our food but for dogs this is problematic to digest. Garlic might make your pasta legendary, but for dogs it’s less “chef’s kiss” and more “call the vet.” Garlic contains a compound called theosulfate which damages their red blood cells. This compound can damage your pup’s insides and turn dinner time into digestive chaos ending in piles of bodily fluids you would rather them keep inside. After ingesting garlic your dog may experience an upset stomach that leads to vomiting and diarrhea. While a delicious seasoning for humans, this tasty seasoning will wreak havoc on your dog's gut. Make sure this delectable seasoning stays on your own food and away from your dog to avoid a disastrous evening.

4. Mustard: Fourth on our list is mustard. Mustard contains compounds that are extremely irritating to your dog's digestion system. This is a condiment found in every pantry and fridge shelf and if your dog gets into it, you are going to know it. Your dog’s stomach is going to report the stolen and guzzled mustard by releasing your dog’s insides all over your floor. Not only are mustard seeds bad for dogs but store bought mustard has other ingredients that make your dog sick creating a highly poisonous concoction that your dog will happily lap up.

5. Nuts: Last but not least on our list of five most avoidable foods for dogs is nuts. Not all nuts are poisonous for your pup but the ones that are, are highly dangerous for your dog. Macadamia nuts are extremely dangerous for dogs and can lead to tremors and temporary paralysis amongst other symptoms making them tiny little scrumptious landmines ready to detonate and create mass gut destruction. Then there’s black walnuts and those can cause neurological issues and seizures. Best to avoid both these highly toxic nuts unless you enjoy rushing to the emergency vet and getting that hefty bill. There are several other nut types that are harmful to your dog like almonds and pistachios to name a few. They aren’t quite as dangerous for dogs as the above mentioned but they will have your dog wondering why on earth you let them get into something so devastating to their health. While nuts are a nutritious snack for humans they are incredibly toxic for dogs and should be avoided.
