Are Ferrets Good Pets

Have you been playing around with the idea of getting a ferret but not sure it’s the right move for you? Let’s explore the pros and cons of owning a ferret and hopefully help you decide if they are the pet for you or not. The last thing anyone wants to do is get a pet just to realize they are more than you can handle or were prepared for. The information provided below is a guide to all things ferret and can walk you through what it will be like owning one.

Ferrets are known to be playful and energetic animals that love to interact with their owner. They are often considered a cross between a dog and a cat, a middle ground if you will. They do need 1-2 hours of daily exercise so if you’re wanting a pet that you can play and interact with then a ferret is a great option. You need to ensure you can provide adequate time for them to get exercise but if that’s something you’re excited about they are a great option for you.

Ferrets are social creatures and it’s highly recommended getting more than one to keep them happy. This means double the fun! If you’re wanting pets to be silly with and engage with then ferrets are the perfect pet because you will ideally have two to play with. They are fun loving creatures excited to have play time with you.

They are small and quiet pets making them great if you have a smaller living space. If you live in an apartment your neighbors aren’t going to be making noise complaints about you as they are generally quiet pets to own. Their compact size means you don’t need to have a yard or bigger house for them to be comfortable. You will have to do some “ferret proofing” as they can easily slip into small crevices and get lost, similar to a hamster. Ferrets are curious little creatures that can slide into the smallest of spaces. This means they can become injured, ingest unwanted items, or disappear all together. You will definitely need to ensure your space is “ferret proof” to keep them safe.

Let’s talk smell. Ferrets are stinky! There’s really not much you can do to avoid the odor. If you own ferrets, your place is going to smell like it. There are of course things you can do to minimize how strong the odor is if you’re willing to take the time. It’s standard levels of care such as grooming and cleaning out cages frequently. Even if you stay on top of those things there is still going to be an odor so that’s something to consider.

Ferrets can be nippy when they are younger meaning they are not ideal to be around small children. They have very sharp teeth that can easily bite through fingers so they are not recommended around small children. They also are quite fragile and susceptible to spine and limb injuries if handled too roughly. If a young child is overcome by their cuteness and squeezes a bit too hard it can injure the ferret more easily than other common pets. It’s best for them to be in households with no children or older children that understand how to properly care for them.

Ferrets can be wonderful pets for those prepared to properly care for them. It’s important to do your research and understand what all is required to care for them. They are mischievous, sweet, and loving little creatures that make teriffic pets for the right person.
