What To Do If Your Dog Gets A Tick
Ticks are unfortunately sometimes part of being a pet owner. It’s vital to your dogs health that you check them for ticks. Especially if you are taking them into the woods or a wilderness area. Continue reading for the best way to remove the tick(s).
Inspect: The first important part is to thoroughly check your dog. You need to get up in every crevice and nook and cranny to ensure you remove any tick that has attached itself to your dog. If you remove 10 ticks but miss one, it will negatively impact your dogs health. Make sure you get every one removed.
Use Tools: Grab a pair of tweezers or something designed for tick removal. Get as much fur out of the way as you can. Grab as close to the ticks head as you can get. You want to pinch it as close to where it’s embedded into your dog as you can. Use firm pressure to pinch the tick and ensure you have a good grip on it. Keep the tweezers pinched close and slowly begin pulling it straight out. Do not twist it, just pull straight out. Keep the firm pressure and place the tick in a jar containing alcohol and seal the jar. Continue this until you have removed every tick. Keep the ticks sealed in the jar. Ticks are incredibly difficult to kill so you need to keep them sealed up tight.
Treat area: After removing each tick you want to treat the area with a mild soap or anti bacterial spray. Use something to gently clean the area to avoid infection.
Dispose of ticks: After removing all the ticks and placing them in the sealed jar of alcohol. Leave them sealed to die in the alcohol and then dispose of the jar safely. The biggest factor here is making sure they don’t escape.
