How To Help Calm Your Dog On The Fourth Of July
The fourth of July is such a hard time for our furry companions. The constant, irregular booming sounds are unfamiliar and create a heightened state of fear. As an owner, there are some proactive strategies that you can do to help your dog cope a little bit better.
Being Home For Them: This may seem like an obvious one to some but one of the biggest ways to help support your pup is to actually be home with them. Leaving your dog alone during the fourth of July will leave them alone during a highly stressful time for them. Simply staying home to be around them will help tremendously. You will be there to comfort them and ensure they don’t feel abandoned.
Muffle The Booms: Doing everything you can to shut out the sounds of the fireworks is helpful. Keeping the doors and windows shut will help muffle some of the noise. Turning on the tv and a loud fan are other ways to try and drown out some of the booming noises. Dogs often are intrigued by watching and hearing other dogs on the tv so now’s the time to play a movie about dogs to help distract your pup.
Anti Anxiety Meds: Depending on how severe your dog handles the fourth of July it may be worth talking to the vet about meds to help them stay calm. You can also get CBD from stores to help calm their nerves. The way we would support a friend that needs anxiety meds during a difficult time, these can be a great aid for your dog.
Tire them out: A great way to help them out is to heavily exercise them during the day. Working them out during the day until they are totally wiped out will help them get into a deep sleep when you get home. Heavy exercise during the day will help them fall asleep before all the noise starts and they are more likely to fall into a deep sleep.
