Top Five Pets For An Apartment

Considering getting a pet when you live in an apartment can be a stressful and confusing endeavor. There is an ever growing list of factors to mull around and it can quickly become overwhelming. I have taken the time to do the research part for you so you can just sit back, relax, sip your coffee and read what I consider to be the 5 best options for pets when you live in an apartment. Let’s dive in!

1. Cat: Ok, this might be the most obvious first pet to list but it’s obvious for a reason. They make fantastic pets for anyone living in an apartment, they are quiet, independent, and don't need much exercise. A cat is light on their feet and not going to be keeping your neighbors up or having them angrily knocking at your door to complain of all the noise. Honestly, your neighbors are likely to not even be aware you have a cat which makes them an ideal apartment pet. Cats are also very low maintenance. You can easily leave them unattended while at work without worry about them being loud, getting into things, or disturbing the neighbors. They’re probably going to secretly, or not so secretly, enjoy having the place all to themselves. You can leave for work guilt free knowing they are absolutely fine chilling at home. As far as exercise goes, cats love vertical obstacles. They are happy to be able to jump up on top of things so you can get a cat perch for them to be entertained that won’t take up too much space because they are designed vertically.

2. Fish: Is there a quieter pet to own than fish…not many! Fish are not going to upset or impact any neighbor you may have. You are definitely not going to be receiving noise complaints when fish are your pet. They are one of the quietest options for a pet. They are also beautiful and captivating to watch. You can bright and colorful and interesting looking fish which can brighten up your place and create something mesmerizing to look at. Fish are a low maintenance pet in that you can leave them home while you’re at work and not worry about them at all. There will be no guilt tripping or anxiety because you have to leave for work or shopping or spending time with other people. You are also far more likely to have people agree to stop by to feed your fish while away for extended periods of time than you are asking someone to pet sit for you. It’s an easy task most neighbors would be happy to help out with.

3. Hamster: Once again, we have a quiet pet. Running on a hamster wheel may end up as background noise for you, your neighbors are not going to notice. They are also hygienic and keep themselves and their environment clean. This is great because they won’t produce much odor compared to other pets. You will be able to invite guests over without worrying about your home smelling like a pet. Another benefit is there isn’t typically a pet fee associated with hamsters the way there usually is with cats and dogs. It’s nice to not have the extra fee. Hamsters also take up very little square footage. They have their enclosure which is typically small and won’t take up much room at all making them ideal for a small living space.

4. Turtle/Gecko: I combined these two reptiles because the reasons they are great for apartments are virtually identical so why not give you a 2 for 1! Once again, and I hate to sound like a broken record, but stay with me…they’re quiet. This really is an important factor because you don’t want neighbors complaining about noise and that isn’t going to happen with one of these pets. These are great pets to have in an apartment because they take up little space. They need their tank and that’s it. They will also live a very long time which means you can maintain them in a relatively small space for years. Geckos can live for up to 20 years and turtles upwards of 50. They will be great lifelong companions that don’t take up much square footage. They don’t require much maintenance. You don’t need to worry about daily walks or exercise with them. You can easily leave them at home unattended while at work or shopping. You can have an easy routine of care and maintenance for them for a very long time.

5. Finches: I am being very specific here to not just say “birds” because I do not recommend all birds for an apartment. However, finches are an excellent bird for this particular situation. Finches are tiny and quiet birds meaning they are not likely to disturb your neighbors. They are not going to need a giant bird cage as they are quite petite and don’t need a large enclosure. You don’t need to worry about damage with them either. Certain birds or other pets are likely to chew or destroy furniture and fixtures but not finches. They will not be ruining anything in your apartment. They are beautiful little birds that will make sweet, soft delightful noises making them a fun pet to have.

These are the top 5 pets I would highly recommend for apartment living. They give you companionship without getting neighbors riled up over noise and boisterous pets. It can be challenging finding the perfect pet when you are restricted in an apartment but there are pets that will be a great choice. Hopefully you found this article helpful!
