Costs Involved With Adopting A Dog

If you are contemplating getting a dog as a pet but unsure of the cost involved, this article will guide you through common costs. Getting a dog as a pet is such an exciting endeavor but there are many costs to consider. It’s important to be aware of the upfront and maintenance costs so you’re not caught off guard.  Getting a dog is meant to be an exciting life event and you don’t want that ruined by unexpected costs associated with becoming a dog owner. Below, you will find a guide to the costs that you can expect.

The first expense to consider is the price of your dog. Many states have adoption fees that can range from $50-$500. It’s important to do some research on what your area charges. Every state is different and different areas are going to charge something different. You absolutely need to look up your area and see what local places are going to charge you for adoption fees. If you are choosing to go through a breeder, that is going to up your cost substantially. Different dog breeds will have a different amount. Certain breeds are more expensive than others. Buying from a breeder often is going to cost you into the thousands. Potentially just over $1000 but it could be much higher depending on the breed you're considering. You will need to investigate the cost in your specific location of the breed you plan on getting. Whether you are adopting or buying from a breeder there will likely be a cost involved.

The second expense to consider is vaccinations. If you choose to adopt then typically your dog will have the core vaccines but booster shots are typically required. While you may not have to pay for the core vaccines, you will have to pay for booster shots. There also may end up being certain vaccinations they skipped that you will want so that should be considered as a potential added cost. If buying from a breeder they may not have gotten any vaccines. Breeders are not legally required to vaccinate puppies so they may opt out of completing them. You should absolutely be inquiring into if they vaccinated your puppy or if you need to complete that task. This can cost upwards of $600 for all the vaccinations recommended.

The third cost to consider is vet costs. I did already discuss vaccinations but there are additional expenses. Most owners want their dogs spayed or neutered. This is to prevent puppies but it also impacts behavior in dogs which is why most owners choose to have this procedure completed. This procedure varies widely and can be anywhere from $100 to over $800. This will vary depending on where you live and the type of dog you have. I’m going to add into this section the cost of microchipping because this would be done by the vet and preferably when you first get your dog. This can cost between $15-$75. It’s important because dogs do get away and a microchip helps them be more easily identified and brought back home to you.

The next expense to consider is buying all the materials needed for your dog. You will need an indoor dog crate. This is necessary for virtually every dog breed. Maybe if you are getting a very small dog like a chihuahua but even then it’s still a good idea to have one. The larger the crate, the pricier it will be. To go inside the crate and to have as an option around the house your dog will need a dog bed. You’re going to need a leash, collar, tags, and waste bags. I would honestly recommend having more than one leash as things can happen to them like getting lost or breaking. Then there’s dog food, treats, and bowls. Treats are an important component to training as well as just being a nice occasional treat for your dog. Then you are going to need grooming tools. The particular tools will depend on the type of dog you have. Even if you already know you’re planning on taking your dog to the groomer you are still going to need tools for home. Many dog breeds require daily brushing to prevent mats from forming.  The overall cost for all the items will vary but plan on around $600.

It is difficult to give an exact estimate of getting a dog because their needs vary so greatly. It can be expected to spend anywhere between $1200-$4500 as upfront costs. It’s a good idea to start thinking of involved expenses sooner so you can start saving ahead of time. Getting a dog is an exciting life event and you don’t want surprise costs impacting the happy moment.
